OPTOMETRIC SERVICES
Northern Eye Care Optometric Services
At Northern Eye Care, your eye health is our top priority for us. Our services range from a routine eye exam to a more comprehensive dilated eye exam where we can diagnose and manage ocular diseases utilizing our state-of-the-art equipment.
Our patients can be evaluated for diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases. Furthermore, our team can also discuss treatment options for computer-related vision problems, such as digital eye strain and chronic dry eye.
Comprehensive Eye Exams
Routine eye exams are an important part of preventative health care. Our eye doctor will test your visual acuity and perform refraction testing to generate a glasses prescription if necessary. An ocular health evaluation will include determining intra-ocular pressure as a preliminary glaucoma screening, binocular and peripheral visual assessments, and a retinal evaluation on all patients. Since many serious eye conditions can begin with no symptoms, you may not know they are present. Early detection and routine annual eye exams are key to ensuring your eyes stay healthy and allow you to see the best for years to come! The team at Northern Eye Care is fully equipped with the latest diagnostic tools to perform full service eye examinations.
Pediatric Eye Exams
Routine eye exams at a young age are important in order to prevent vision problems when your child becomes older. A majority of vision problems can be treated when detected early. Often signs of vision problems in children include: short attention span, avoiding reading or other close activities, losing his or her place when reading, or turning his or her head to the side. If your child begins displaying any of these symptoms, it is important to have an eye exam in order to ensure your child’s overall health.
Our optometrist will assess your child’s visual acuity, eye alignment, eye movement skills, peripheral vision, and eye pressure. We will also assess for any color deficiencies and determine the extent of your child’s depth perception. Pediatric eye exams often include dilation with agents that help relax the eye’s internal focusing muscles. This allows us to determine the child’s true prescription and is performed in order to determine an accurate glasses prescription if necessary. This also allows us to screen for potential amblyogenic factors that may exist.
Amblyopia can present with symptoms including an eye turn as well as blurry vision in one or both eyes. If a child is found to have amblyopia, an appropriate treatment and management regimen is implemented, often consisting of prescribing glasses and following the child’s progress as needed to ensure improvement.
What to Expect During our Eye Exam?
The examination begins with asking you about any vision or eye complaints, a history of your ocular and medical health, and your family history of eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or any other family history of vision loss.
Our optometrist will then assess your visual acuity, eye movements, pupillary reflexes and visual field. Next we will assess your refractive status for any eyeglasses and/or contact lens correction and finally, perform an anterior as well as posterior ocular health assessment by dilating your eyes. Depending on all the gathered information, our staff may suggest further testing to evaluate your ocular health.
Medical Eye Exams
Diabietic Eye Exam
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that affects the body’s ability to produce insulin which can lead to elevated blood sugar levels. As a result, this affects vital body parts including the eyes. Annual dilated eye exams are recommended for all diabetic patients as prevention and screening for potential sight-threatening conditions.
Glaucoma Evaluation
Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve and is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. With our comprehensive exams, we regularly screen for glaucoma risk factors and can provide more extensive diagnostic testing as indicated. It is essential for patients with a family history of glaucoma to be screened regularly.
Cataract
Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye undergoes natural aging changes. Patients with visually significant cataracts can experience visual blur, difficulty seeing in dim environments and haloes or glare with bright lights. We can help monitor cataract progression and refer to the appropriate specialists if cataract surgery is indicated.
Dry Eye Treatment
Dry eye syndrome is a very common condition among many patients and can manifest as symptoms of burning, tearing, redness and foreign body sensation. Individualized treatment options ranging from (non)medicated eye drops to punctal plugs can be considered after a thorough analysis of the ocular surface and tear film.
Eye Infections
Eye infections commonly cause symptoms such as ocular redness, irritation, foreign body sensation and discharge. They are commonly caused by bacterial, viral or allergic agents. Our doctors will evaluate and determine the etiology in order to prescribe the appropriate treatment for you.
